Mini-splits 101
Ductless, in plain English
A mini-split is a heat pump with no ductwork. An outdoor condenser connects to one or more indoor air handlers through a small line set, and it heats and cools.
Single-zone
One outdoor unit, one indoor head. Good for a single room, garage, addition or cabin, or the room the furnace never quite reaches.
Multi-zone
One outdoor unit feeding several indoor heads, so you can cover multiple rooms when running ducts doesn’t make sense. Takes more planning, so call us first.

Do I need an engineer to size this?
No. Room sizes, insulation and how you use the space are enough to start. Send photos or a rough sketch and we’ll talk it through.
Can I really install it myself?
All three DIY lines, DIY Select, Easy Pro and 5th Gen, come with pre-charged quick-connect line sets, so you can mount and connect them yourself. Check with your town about permits. For the electrical hookup, consult a licensed electrician.
Single-zone or multi-zone?
One room: single-zone. Several rooms on one outdoor unit: multi-zone. If you’re not sure, call. That’s the first conversation. 5th Gen is our only multi-zone line. DIY Select and Easy Pro are single-zone.
Can I pick up at the shop?
Yes, during shop hours (Mon–Fri 8:00–4:00) at 138 Pancake Road. Or MRCOOL ships it free, directly from MRCOOL, in about 5 working days.
Do you install mini-splits?
No. We sell and advise. We don’t install. Hire a licensed installer or electrician.
